Interest in global health research and practice have grown by leaps and bounds in the past few years at Yale. In this spirit, Dr. Khoshnood, Director of Global Health Internships, is committed to developing the mission, objectives and principles to guide interested undergraduate and graduate students.
The GHI offers two unique fellowship opportunities to Yale students working in global health: the GHI Field Experience Award (begun in June 2009) and the Multidisciplinary Student Team Project (begun in June 2010), which is now called the GHI Yale Collaborative Action Project (Y-CAP). Y-CAP is supported by the Maureen and Antoine Chiquet Fund.
The GHI Field Experience Award has supported numerous undergraduate, graduate and professional students in their global health endeavors. This award enabled 12 students in 2009, 20 in 2010 and 17 in 2011 to puruse their global health interests. Student projects have ranged from a research study of human trafficking in Moldova, to developing standard guidelines for HIV/AIDS prevention services in Thailand, to the investigation of watershed-based environmental health policy along the US-Mexican border.
In 2010, the Multidisciplinary Student Team Project award (now called Y-CAP) was established to foster global health across the many schools and departments at Yale University. This award supports teams of three to five students representing at least two disciplines to develop a scholarly and ethically rigorous project to address a health problem of global importance. In 2010, a team comprised of undergraduate and graduate students from different engineering departments received the award to travel to Lanzhou, China and investigate indoor air pollution in day care centers, schools and offices. The students hope the results of their research will help inform public health practitioners and policy makers on the best methods of improving the health of the general population.
In addition to the Y-CAP award and the Field Experience Award, students from across the University may benefit from accessing the Students Grants and Contracts Database. There, one may find more details about the following grants that may help you fund your global health internship. Please keep in mind that many of the summer fellowship deadlines are in January or February of that year.
Public health students, see a nice list and brief description of additional internship funding at Yale School of Public Health.
